A private mooring (installed in 2019) will hold your boat. Four kayaks, a canoe, and a stand up paddleboard are available for your use, with personal flotation devices available. A game room in a detached converted garage will lure the young at heart with ping pong, air hockey, and foosball tables. Swings, a variety of lawn games, and a volleyball / badminton net will keep everybody active when they’re not in the water or out exploring the area. The house is fully equipped for your relaxing vacation. Downstairs features a large comfortable open living area with sliding glass doors overlooking the lake and a gas fireplace for chilly evenings. A fully-equipped modern kitchen connects to a dining area with seating for 12. A kids’ play area offers games, art supplies, toys, and a table. A large flatscreen is equipped with Roku. The Blue Room has a queen, a daybed, a pullout trundle, and a fantastic view over the lake. The Flower Room has a full bed with views to the lake and the back yard. The Bunk Room has one bunk bed and a cozy window seat / reading nook. All upstairs rooms are wood paneled and carpeted, with adequate storage for all your stuff and multiple windows to catch the cool evening breezes. Each room has an individual thermostat for your complete comfort. A full bath with tub shower completes the upstairs. Local attractions and activities are almost too numerous to mention. Swim or fish right off your own private dock or head out onto Lake Champlain in a kayak or canoe. Learn the rich geologic history of the island's Chazy Reef at the Isle La Motte Historical Society. Walk along the fascinating interpretive trail through the Goodsell Ridge Fossil Preserve. Visit the haunting Fisk Quarry Preserve, right around the corner. The historic Fisk Farm is a half mile up the road. St. Anne’s Shrine at the north end of the island draws thousands of visitors every year. Five state parks and a golf course are nearby. A 30-minute drive will take you to local vineyards with frequent wine-tastings. For those wanting an urban experience, Montreal and Burlington are each about a one-hour drive, and Stowe is about 90 minutes. Hiking in New York State’s Adirondack Mountains is just across the lake. You will find a complete detailed guide to local attractions at the house. Experience all that “island time” has to offer…we look forward to sharing the South End Lake House with you!

Yes, clean is on my mind, like yours! No effort spared! Just don't take Liberty Lane if it comes up on your GPS en route. It's a Vermont cow path. When you arrive, mind-blowing view and sunsets. Just crazy amazing@ Book filled, wildly romantic, cozy and colorful one bedroom (half opening to living room) with gas fireplace, full kitchen, covered deck... It's funky and fantastic - with a canoe for two. and two kayaks. x (bring please organic soap/shampoo products please, to protect the lake, so close!) Why do I say funky? The tub/shower is behind a screen in the living room/kitchen area. The toilet is in a closet next to the kitchen! If you need LOTS of privacy, this isn't for you! People who love this place don't mind letting it all hang out. I would say they were Bohemians, world-traveled, with priorities other than the set up of the cottage. VIEW VIDEO- that sums it up... ! Narrow part of Lake Champlain, so you can canoe to New York State and some beautiful inlets. On a quiet 'dead end' lakefront dirt road, no traffic, just the sounds of the waves, the birds, the crickets, a train whistle across the lake. There are a couple of other cottages down the road - so you can borrow a cup of sugar if you want to!- but pretty private and quiet... Great retreat to finish your novel or start one. Doggies LOVE it. Plenty of squirrels to chase and no cars. Long walks in the farm fields or the nearby trails up to gorgeous views of the Adirondacks. Google Snake Mountain. You can sit and watch the lake and sunset from the porch or walk down a short winding path to the Look Out. Fires on the beach are the best, with a slate fireplace, - and plenty of beautiful smooth slate rocks to design your own. When I come back to visit there are often beautiful sculptures make of rocks. As I mentioned, the clawfoot tub is in the corner of the living room behind a Thai Screen! with a shower, yes-- but you can take a wonderful tub while talking to your beloved who is cooking you dinner! The toilet is in a little closet near the kitchen in a closet of its own. (Water Closet they used to call it?) Again, it's funky! This is NOT Motel 8! The mosquitos don't like the wind from the lake, neither do the flies, so that's a big plus. Every night there is a spectacular sunset, varied, intense, life changing. I ask that guests bring towels and double bed sheets. If you're flying in, can make arrangements. Yes, there is wireless, who can do without it? but NO TV. Huge selection of books you meant to read last year. Great fishing, perch and bass right off the shore, or take the canoe out. Great birdwatching! Eagles, huge woodpeckers, hummingbirds, eagles! This area of the Northeast has the darkest night skies -- so the stargazing is spectacular! Grill on the beach at dusk, or the deck, or take the canoe out and watch the stars. Steep stairs, but if they are too much for you, there is another way to the beach, just let me know Wonderful hiking trails nearby and waterfalls... This is a great part of Vermont... ! It's 20 minutes, a beautiful easy drive to Middlebury. Or head to Bristol Gap. This place is warm, inviting, and sane. If you are uptight and have lots of issues with who knows what, you just won't fit in. I need to say that up front. There is a special feeling here, because it's not a staid rental, but really a home. I keep in touch with many guests who have been here through the years because they are my kind of people. Open, warm and friendly, exploratory, curious, outdoorsy, adaptable, bibliophiles who love to cook out under the stars.

We had a lovely time and the house perfectly suited our needs." -- Meredith, June 2017 "Our family had a great stay in the house and on the lake. The house was a change from what we were used to staying in up here. A lot more room for us. We had fun fishing and tubing. All of us caught a lot of fish whether we trolled or sat in one place or went where to current and the wind took us. Thank you for the quick response when we did not have water. The house was very well kept and clean. It was so peaceful and the sunrises and sunsets were amazing. I hope we can do this again next year." -- Terounzo Family, July 2016 "Loved my mornings on the dock, the very comfortable bed, my walks to the Harborside Store, rocking on the porch, reading and painting. Thank you for a wonderful week." -- Linda, August 2014 "Thank you so much for everything. We had a great time at the Alburgh Dunes State Park beach and especially relaxing on the front porch with our morning coffee watching Buster and the horses walk by. Our dogs really loved the water and being able to relax outside. Being in such close proximity to Montreal was great for our mid week trip to see the fireworks competition. Weather was great and this area is beautiful." -- Jeff, Chelsea, Spenser, Uni and Ebi, July 2014 "The dock was wonderful, the kids loved fishing off it. Our 10 year old was lucky enough to catch a large bass, even though it scared her. Thank you for the use of your home for our family to spend time together." -- The Woon family, CA, VT and PA "Just finished up our week. We love Lake Champlain! The cool breeze was much appreciated. We'll be back. Thanks for sharing your well-equipped home!" -- The Wysocki family, NY "Very cozy, well-equipped home. We had beautiful warm weather and a wonderful time. Thank you." -- Catherine Allaire, Vancouver "We've had a great time up here - weather fantastic. We used our boat a lot. Tonight our 15 year old son , Eric, and I watched a huge orange moon rise over the lake -- awesome. Spacious, 2700 sq. ft lake house, with westerly views of Lake Champlain and Adirondaks. SATURDAY TO SATURDAY BOOKING ONLY. Our summer home is elevated on a bluff off lake. This is the best setting -it is quieter and more private. Sit on the porch and enjoy views without fisherman or kayaks nearby. Stairs to the lake are being replaced and work will be done in spring, and the dock will be in ASAP, but likely not before May 15th. The dock is a large, floating dock with cleats for boats. Rentals are Saturday to Saturday only. Do not book any other ranges. The home can sleep 16, and in addition, there is a bunk house that can sleep two more on single beds, and more on the floor/air matress. It is a great spot for kids to hang out. (The total count of beds\guests does not include the bunkhouse space.) There are stairs to the lake. The replacement of them began in the fall, and will be completed in the spring weather permitting. I cannot guarantee when they will be in place, but should be done by mid-May. Also, due to weather and lake levels, I cannot guarantee when the floating dock will be in place, but hopefully by mid-May as well. Again, I cannot guarantee when and cannot refund or make changes to reservations. Understand that if you book early in the spring, this is a risk. Docks are removed before mid-October. Fishing off our dock is excellent. There is a sunken barge crib that attracts many fish. Swimming off the dock is a lot of fun. At the end of the dock it is deep, especially in the earlier part of the summer. The house faces west on the Alburg passage and as such, with the narrower passage, the waves and wind are greatly diminished from the broad lake. During the week, the lake is very quiet. During the weekends, it is busier, but with the house on a bluff, it is very enjoyable. The original structure was built in 1924. In 2009, we completed a major overhaul. Everything was replaced except for the frame, chimney, some floors, and some siding. It was, essentially, built brand new in 2009. On the back of the house is a large, beautiful screened in porch. Sleeping areas are cooled with window AC units.

ARTICLE FROM THE BOSTON GLOBE One downshifts upon arrival at the two-town island community of South Hero and Grand Isle on Lake Champlain. There are speed zones to observe, certainly, but also many bicyclists to respect, for this is a cycling Eden. But mostly you slow down psychologically, almost automatically. That’s because the island has all the soothing attributes of any seashore community but with one major difference: Instead of ocean expanse, one gazes across water at summits, the Green Mountains over which the sun rises, the Adirondacks over which it sets. There are winding country roads to explore; and farmers’ markets, orchards, produce kiosks (honor system), ice cream stands, art galleries, and even a winery that beckon you to stop. Grand Isle is full of speed bumps, all welcome. DINE For fine dining in a sporty atmosphere, try the Blue Paddle Bistro (316 US Route 2, South Hero, entrees $15 to $28, open for dinners Tuesday-Sunday, brunches Sundays on holiday weekends. For terrific hand-cut fries and other fried foods stop at Kim’s Snack Bar (corner of Routes 314 and 2, Grand Isle, no phone or website). Two spots for formal dining require a short drive across a drawbridge to another island, North Hero, to Shore Acres Inn & Restaurant (237 Shore Acres Drive, entrees $18.95-$37.95) and The North Hero House Inn & Restaurant (3643 Route 2, entrees $22-$27), both offering lakeside views. DURING THE DAY Bikers can enjoy the views along Grand Isle. While vacationing at the lakeshore it’s hard not to think occasionally of fish or other critters of the deep. For a sense of what’s below Champlain’s surface, stop by the visitor center at the Ed Weed Fish Culture Station, a state hatchery (14 Bell Hill Road, Grand Isle, open 8-4 daily, including holidays, for self-guided tours). Visitors can view Champlain’s most common fish species, feed fingerlings in their tanks, and stroll along the banks of a pond, occasionally catching a glimpse of osprey and other lakeshore birds. If art’s your thing, check out Grand Isle Art Works (259 Route 2, Grand Isle, open Monday-Saturday 10-4, but until 8 on Thursday, Sunday 9-3; café hours Tuesday-Saturday 10-3, dinners Thursday evenings), a gallery in a 1797 farmhouse featuring the works of some 75 Vermont painters and crafts people. For a dessert or to spoil your appetite, stop at Vermont Nut Free Chocolates (10 Island Circle, Grand Isle) for specialty chocolates made without nuts or peanuts, a special blessing for anyone with nut allergies. And for some history? Consider one of the oldest log cabins in North America, the Hyde Log Cabin, a state historic site (Route 2, Grand Isle, just north of the intersection with Hyde Road, open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 11-5). The small cabin, with furnishings, was built around 1783 by a Revolutionary War veteran, Jedediah Hyde, whose descendants lived in the structure over the course of 150 years. And, finally, all followers of the apple-a-day adage, should consider Hackett’s Orchard (86 South St., South Hero) or Allenholm Farm (111 South St., South Hero, offering a “petting paddock” of farm animals for kids) Both orchards also sell varieties of berries, fruits and vegetables, plus ice cream, cider, maple syrup and other Vermont food specialties. Hackett’s Orchard in South Hero offers fresh produce. For renting bikes; North Hero House or Hero's Landing. Also LOCAL MOTION OF VT in Burlington DURING THE NIGHT Face it, after a day at the beach or hours of bicycling, you may not be in the mood for a raucous nightlife — which is good because all options on the island are low key. One might visit to Snow Farm Vineyard (190 West Shore Road, South Hero) on an evening of tastings or musical performances. For frothy Vermont brews, and a chance to watch the Red Sox on the flat-screen, try McKee’s Island Pub & Pizza (513 Route 2, South Hero) McKee’s, offering subs, pasta, and salads, is also a good place to take the family for dinner. And if it’s really the simplest of pleasures you’re pursuing, you can stand in line at Seb’s Snack Bar (295 Route 2, South Hero), an island institution, for a close-up view of Americana and a “creemee,” ice cream cone, shake, or float. ARTICLE IN THE US NEWS-2021 There are few places in the U.S. where you can island hop via car. The Lake Champlain Islands in Vermont is one of those places. These five islands, which sit on 120-mile-long Lake Champlain, are all connected via U.S. Route 2 (also known as the Roosevelt Highway). The islands are home to beaches like Alburgh Dunes State Park and White’s Beach, farms (including Snow Farm Vineyard and Hackett’s Orchard) and plenty of lovely trails. The bike-friendly Island Line Trail is a particularly scenic pathway that crosses the lake from Causeway Park on mainland Vermont to South Hero Island. There are some hotels on the islands, and camping is available at Grand Isle State Park. Plus, since Burlington is less than 24 miles southeast of South Hero Island, you can always book accommodations there.
